Being a Minority at your College or University

The most difficult environment in which to appreciate your bilingualism and biculturalism is in a place where you are the minority. Unfortunately, this issue of diversity is present in a lot of institutions of higher education in America, where it's often the case that you will not immediately hear your native language or find people that share it. It can be difficult to thrive in this kind of environment, because the disconnect with other students can cause an isolation that may prevent you from advancing.

Welcome to the online community for Seal of Biliteracy recipients!

So you've received the Seal of Biliteracy ... now what?

Sealofbiliteracy.org offers you a forum where you can connect with other recipients and learn how to use your bilingualism as a tool, not an impediment, for academic and professional success. SealofBiliteracy.org can help connect you to Hispanic scholarships or scholarships for other bilingual students, which will become essential as you enter the world of higher education and start working toward your future goals.

Welcome!

The Velázquez Seal of Biliteracy recognizes bilingual students for their academic success. You will find information here on both bilingual and Hispanic scholarships, bilingual benefits and you'll also get to connect with other bilingual students that have received the Seal of Biliteracy.

Our vision

Our vision at Velázquez is to help bilingual students recognize the value of their academic success and see the tangible benefits of being bilingual.

Bilingual benefits

There are many bilingual benefits for individuals who speak more than one language. Aside from the personal enrichment of being able to experience more than one culture, bilingual benefits cross into school and employment as well. Colleges are always looking for students with diverse backgrounds, and being granted the Velázquez Seal of Biliteracy can strengthen a college application as evidence of both strong academic success and language abilities.

Benefits can include employment benefits, such as bilingual jobs. Bilingual certification and language skills can give job candidates an advantage over other applicants. Many employers take language abilities into consideration when hiring employees for bilingual jobs and may offer employment benefits. Bilingual jobs can offer a stipend or “differential pay” for employees who speak more than one language, making bilingual certification even more important.

Our goal is to provide information on bilingual jobs and connect bilingual employees with potential employers. For those who have been awarded the Velázquez Seal of Biliteracy, registering your seal is extremely important because it allows us to verify your bilingual certification with potential employers and opens up opportunities for bilingual jobs. This will allow you to begin enjoying the bilingual benefits of your academic success.
